Question 1.
(A) Read the extract and complete the activities given below: (12)[16]
I was quite happy getting into IIT, but my joy was shortlived. At Solapur, I had not seen any building which was more than three storeyed. Mumbai however was full of skyscrapers. At I IT, most of the students and professors used to converse in English whereas my English was very poor. I had my entire education in Marathi.
My spoken English was quite pathetic. Not only did I have a very weak vocabulary, but, my pronunciation also was terrible and my construction of English sentences very awkward to say the least. Due to all this, I was feeling quite lonely and terrified in Mumbai in general and IIT in particular. I had developed an inferiority complex and wanted to run away from IIT and even Mumbai.
One day, I was sitting at my mess table in the hostel sipping tea when a senior guy came and sat on the chair adjacent to jane. He was a convent educated guy with fairly sophisticated English-at least spoken or colloquial English. He was a bit arrogant and wanted to pull my leg.
He tried to engage in some conversation with me and started pointing out errors in just about every sentence or everything that I said. After about 5 minutes he walked away after insulting me.
I felt extremely humiliated and upset. As it is, I was feeling quite depressed and diffident and this incident was the last straw. I was almost broken. Read the following extract and complete the activities given below: (12)[18]
The government of India is encouraging medical tourism in the country by offering tax benefits and export incentives to the participating hospitals. Medical visas are being cleared quickly without any hassles. With a view to facilitating the growth of medical tourism industry, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare along with the Ministry of Tourism has set up a task force to evaluate the opportunities in the industry.
Efforts are being made to standardise procedures and to guide foreign patients to select the hospitals most suited to their needs. Meanwhile, several private hospitals are seeking to take advantage of the booming medical tourism industry and are investing hugely in acquiring equipment and skills.
However, medical tourism carries some risks that locally provided medical care does not. Some countries like India, Malaysia and Thailand have very different infectious diseases rarely found in Europe and North America. Exposure to diseases without having built-up natural immunity can be a hazard for weak individuals specially with respect to gastrointestinal diseases like Hepatitis A, Amoebic dysentery etc., which could slow down the recovery process. Also, medical tourists may be at risk from mosquito-transmitted diseases, influenza and tuberculosis.
The quality of post-operative care can also vary dramatically depending on the hospital and the country. Finally, after returning home, a patient has limited contact with their surgeon. This may make it difficult to deal with any complications that may arise later, such as a delayed infection.
The concept of medical tourism raises some important questions regarding accessibility, affordability and ethics in medical care. It is unfortunate that a large section of the Indian population has little or no access to private health care. Public health care System is inadequate and lacks proper infrastructure and facilities. One wonders if it is sensible to make provisions for medical treatment in a democratic country like India, which has failed to provide nourishment, sanitation and health care to its masses.

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes;
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.
One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven trees,
Or softly lightens o’er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express,
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.
And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!
Answer:
Poetic Appreciation:
‘She walks in Beauty’ is an 18 lines lyrical poem consisting of six line stanzas (sestet). This poem is written by George Gordon Byron, well known as Lord Byron. He is a famous poet from the Romantic era of English literature in the 19th century. The title means that beauty surrounds the woman, making her magnificent.
The poet, thus, admires the beauty of the woman that is expressed in her inner beauty. The message delivered by the poem is that the outer beauty stems from her calm and composed mind with her sweet and innocent heart. Thus, the woman whom the poet admires is a symbol of beauty and innocence.
The poem follows a regular rhyme scheme of abab throughout. The language used in the poem is rich and complex. The use of a variety of poetic devices like Alliteration, Exclamation, Antithesis, Inversion, Metaphor, Personification, Repetition and Imagery enhance its appeal. The visual imagery is witnessed when the poet compares the woman to a cloudless and starry night.’
The qualities like ‘mellowed eyes’ ‘wavy raven dresses’ ‘soft calm face’ paints a beautiful picture of an extraordinary wonderful women. This represents a perfect harmony between beautiful nature and the woman with a perfect balance between her mind and body. Throughout the poem, I admire how the poet moves through the inner thoughts of the woman to her heart full of righteous character and her attractive appearance using rhythmic language.

(2) Statement of Purpose
Since my childhood I have always had a liking for the news reporting. Belonging to a family where my aunt is a reporter, I would often accompany her to the studio during my vacations. Somehow having good public speaking skills 1 was sure about my life’s goal. With her I also understand the nitty gritty of this field called ‘Journalism’.

My career plan is now to study Mass-media at the graduation level and then move on to post graduate studies to gather insight, knowledge and experience. I am focused on my studies, life goals and achievements. The rest of my time, I spend time reading novels especially detective novels.

(3) Group Discussion
Evaluator: Your topic for group discussion today is “Traditional foods provide more nutrition to the children as compared to junk food”. You may now begin the discussion.
Myself: I would like to initiate the discussion and add my ideas to it. Junk food is extremely harmful for the school going children, hence, traditional and home made fresh food must be encouraged.
Rama: It seems to me that this is a valid point as in their growing years traditional foods like pulses, millets, vegatables and fruits provide necessary nutrients.’
Aarav: In my opinion for today’s fast life and working parents, junk food has become an easy means of satisfying their hunger. How will the working mother cope with the responsibility?
Myself: How would you feel if traditional food replaced the junk food in the school and college canteen.
Rama: I think this is a good suggestion. Fresh and healthy fruits and vegetables must be used to prepare the mid meals, snacks, etc.
Aarav: The standards of nutrition will improve and children will get the necessary vitamins, proteins, etc.
Evaluator: I suggest we conclude the discussion.
Rama: We can conclude by saying that home made Indian recipes can be suggested and prepared by our NGO and begin this programme at the earliest. ‘

Respected dignitaries and dear students.
A very good morning to all of you. Today, on World Environment Day I, Mrs. Archara Badhija affiliated to the NGO in your area would like to say a few words on one of the basic necessities of life on this earth, water. Fresh water is a limited resource Due to global warming the availability of water is changing in the nature’s cycle too. Today, many parts of the country are facing drought like situation.
There is a severe shortage of drinking water and conservation of this natural resource is the need of this day. Therefore, it is a priority for all of us to develop measures to save water. Students must learn to avoid wasting of water and learn to use it conservatively.
We should also reuse water in our day-to-day requirements, for e.g. watering the plants without water wastage, pick your gadgets like washing machines wisely, check for the repair of leaks, etc.
Rain water harvesting techniques must be practised to increase the level of ground water. Farmers must also be educated about the storage and use of precious rain water. Natural tanks must be made and water must not be allowed to flow off into the sea.
I would like to thank the administrators and the principal for speaking to the students on such an important topic today. Thank you.

(3) Expansion of idea:
Experience is the best teacher. If you warn a child not to put his or her hand near a fire, he or she may not listen to you. But if the child actually touches the flame out of curiosity, he or she will feel the burn. By actual experience the child will learn that putting one’s hand in fire can cause a lot of pain and physical hurt.
Most of our study is based on books. We may read a lot about the places and monuments, but by actually making a visit, we will really experience its grandeur. There are many skills like mechanical skills for which mere theoretical knowledge is not sufficient. We must actually go through the experience of handling the machines and learning from our mistakes.
Our judgements about people or things are based on our past experiences. Every individual has his or her own nature. Thus, a generalised judgement will hardly help to understand. This can apply appropriately for the classroom teaching-learning procedure too.
Thus, we can conclude that experience is the best teacher, one should not shy away from the various experiences life has to offer.

(1) Film review:
Review of the film ‘Mission Mangal’. Mission Mangal is a film based on the real scientists of ISRO, who contributed to India’s first interplanetary expedition, Mass Orbiter Mission (MOM).
The producer is R. Balki and the director is Jagan Shakti. The main characters are Akshay Kumar and Vidya Balan in the lead, supported by Sonakshi Sinha, Taapsee Pannu, Kirti Kulhari, Nithya Menon and Sharman Joshi. Akshay Kumar plays the role of chief scientist Rakesh Dhawan of ISRO who leads the team of women engineers. The location is the interior of a laboratory, in ISRO.
A team of Indian scientists at ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) take on the apparently impossible task of successfully sending a satellite into the orbit of the planet Mars in India’s maiden attempt.
The film highlights their problems and their successes, and narrates the story in a way in which audiences and children will understand the complex scientific experiment: The film simplifies it for the commons. It is an extremely patriotic film with a message that Indians can make almost impossible dreams come true if they put their hearts and soul into them. Overall the acting has been good.
This film is worth watching, giving us a chance to cheer on the Indian scientists. Being a film inspired by true events the three-songs have been composed by Amit Trivedi. Thus, it is a must-watch flim.
