Question 1.
(A) Read the extract and complete the activities given below: (12)[16]
At a corner of Sixth Avenue electric lights and cunningly displayed wares behind plate glass made a shop window attractive. Soapy took a stone and dashed it through the glass. People came running, round the corner, a policeman in the lead. Soapy stood still with his hands in his pockets, and smiled at the sight of brass button.
“Where’s the man that done that?” inquired the officer agitatedly.
“Don’t you think that I might have had something to do with it?” said Soapy, with a friendly voice, as one greets good fortune.
The policemen refused to accept Soapy even as a clue. Men who smash windows do not remain to chat with the police. They take to their heels. The policeman saw a man half-way down the block running to catch a car. With drawn club, he joined in the pursuit. Soapy, with disgust in his heart, drifted along, twice unsuccessful.
On the opposite side of the street was a restaurant of no great pretensions. It catered to large appetites and modest purses, Its crockery and atmosphere were thick; its soup and napery thin. Into this place Soapy betook himself without challenge. At a table he sat and consumed beefsteak, flapjacks, doughnuts and pie. And then he told the waiter the fact that the minutest coin and himself were total strangers.
“Now, get busy and call a cop,” said Soapy. “And don’t keep a gentleman waiting.”
“No cop for you,” said the waiter, with a voice like butter cakes and an eye like the cherry in the Manhattan cocktail. “Hey, Con!”
Neatly upon his left ear on the callous pavement two waiters pitched Soapy. He arose, joint by joint, as a carpenter’s rule opens, and dusted his clothes. Arrest seemed now but an elusive dream. “I don’t believe in taking the right decisions. I take decisions, I take decisions and then make them right.” One of them make them right. One of the Ratan Tata’s inspiring words which made me dream beyond shadows. I feel fortunate that I discovered him in the early stage of my life and now I am using his teachings to mould my future the way I want.
Even though Ratan Tata was born in a very posh family of India,he never took money and power for granted. He graduated from Riverdale country from New York, Ratan Tata began his career in the Tata Group working on the shop floor of Tata Steel. After working for almost 10 years he was appointed as the director-in-charge of the National Radio and Electronics Company Limited (NELCO) in order to help its struggling finances.
He worked hard building a better consumer electronics division but the economic recession and union strikes prevented him from achieving success and this success helped Tata to be appointed as the chairman of the Tata Group of companies. He started with a very basic job in his father’s company and today he owns a billion dollar company.
The tag of greatness does not come without making any sacrifices and this tag on Ratan Tata suits to its best.
Tata group launched its passenger car Tata Indica in the year 1998 but Tata Indica was a failure in its first year and the experiment seemed to be failing. Many people started advising Ratan Tata that he should sell the passenger car business.

The three-hour meeting at Ford headquarters in Detroit, chairman of Ford (Bill Ford) said to Ratan Tata, “Why did you enter in the passenger car business when you were not knowing of it. It will be a favour if we buy this business from you.”
Ratan Tata decided to move back home. While travelling he was very tense as the feeling of being insulted was on his mind. After earlier failures, Tata Motors did well with its business of passenger cars but in the same period, Ford did very bad. In 2008 when Ford was on it way of bankruptcy, Tata Group offered Ford to buy its luxury car brand, Jaguar Land Rover. Ford arrived in Mumbai for the meeting. (2) Statement of Purpose
Few professions are demanding and existing in today’s time. Fashion designing is one at these professions. Designing outlets and studying them has been of my favourite activities. I have been helping my friends and family to design and style their outlet from early teenage.
I have received a lot of appreciation and compliments for my understanding and taste in fashion design. Right from primary stages. I have been passionate about drawing and sketching. This passion also motivated me and pushed me towards fashion designing. While in Mumbai, my friend and I had participated in a zonal level competition of fashion design.
I made the sketches and we prepared clothing for our friends. We received a consolation prise in it similarly in our junior college level, we participated in the intercollegiate competition. We prepared new trendy fashion sketches. Our fashionable clothing got a huge applause and appreciation from everyone. We received the second prize for our college. Now we are planning to participate in a state level competition.
My formative years of education were at St. Parul High School, Mumbai. In the year 2013. I relocated to Karnataka and enrolled at Jupiter School for my secondary studies. I had secured 93% marks in grade X. I successfully completed my High school education from a reputed institute, St Xavier’s Junior College with an overall A+ grade.
My major Subjects were Finance and Accounting. At present, I am profoundly motivated to study fashion designing in your reputed college. I have given the entrance examination of your college and expecting to have a good score in it.
I have chosen M. Rajeshwar college of Art, Hubli as my further educational destination because it is a highly reputed educational institute with a proven record preparing its students with skills and knowledge that are needed for employment. It facilitates international students to settle down smoothly in a new environment to communicate and collaborate with people from a diverse cultural background.
This greatly appeals to me. So I am very eager to get admission in the institution and explore myself as much as I can. I intend to apply the skills that I will develop here and earn through my studies which will help me to establish a successful fashion brand of my own in our country.
I would like to play an integral role in the development and maturity of the fashion industry in our country and serve as an example to other aspiring fashion designers. The information given above is true and correct from the best of my knowledge and I appreciate receiving a positive response from you.

Sujit: I would like to begin by saying that I actually like the outdoor games like cricket, football, volleyball, etc. Initially I thought that the habit of reading as very dull and boring. It needs sitting in a place for a good amount of time and read to comprehend well.
So I used to prefer avoiding it, but after talking to my parents and my elder brother, I have realised that reading helps us in many different ways as it opens up a window to understand the world around us. As a result, I have made it a habit of not going to deep before reading something.
I: I am totally in agreement with what you have said, Sujit, though not truly food it reading. I read some books given to me as gift by my sister and now I have fallen in love with reading. Reading is certainly an enriching habit. We can also we, the internal as there are thousands of books available on it. The audio books also help us in listening to the stories.
Rohit: I slightly disagree as sitting with a mobile in band or in front of a laptop for hours is a tedious job for me. Rather than that I would like to take a book in my hand and relax in a chair and go on reading for hours. Reading requires good patience and perseverance to understand everything minutely. It offers us an opportunity to meet different personalities and situations and the way they react to those situation.
Kishor: I am extremely overjoyed to listen to all this. I also like to spend time watching television or playing video or computer games. But my mother has helped me in developing a habit of reading and now reading
has become my favourite activity.
Now I know that reading makes us go through different circumstances, as well, sometimes really very problematic, ancf makes us learn the technique of facing and overcoming them. It makes us look within ourselves, understand and analyse our reaction objectively.
Evaluator: Now I feel that it is time to reach to the conclusion.
Sujit: In conclusion. I feel that we have our own hobbies or interests and likes or dislikes. But we all have realised the importance of reading in our lives. For enhancing our knowledge, we need to carry on this habit of reading throughout.

(3) Time and tide wait for none
Literally speaking, the given proverb indicates that the forces of nature such as the passage of time and movement or ebb and tide of the sea are never under the control of human beings. Man, in spite of whatever efforts he makes, can never stop the passing of time as well as delay the fide. Man has to utilise the time in the best possible way by making proper use of opportunities coming in his way as they knock the door.
Each individual has the similar amount of time at one’s disposal. How a person utilises the available time depends upon that person. A significant aspect to remember is that time lost once, never comes back.
So judicious use of time is very important. One has to plan every work in a methodical and systematic way, organise all the tasks to be done well and while doing all this, one has to keep adequate amount of time to take rest.
Rather than delaying the work, doing it right now should be our approach. If a person keeps on waiting for the right time to do a certain work, such a time never comes as each passing minute is valuable. An opportunity comes only once. So when it comes we need to grab it to move forward in our lives.
