(B) Appreciation of the poem ’All the World’s a Stage’
The poem titled ’All the World’s a Stage’ has been written by the famous English poet and playwright, William Shakespeare.

There is no specific rhyme scheme in this poem, but the poet has written the poem with a steady rhythm of five beats in each line. Because of this uniformity in rhythm, the poem is a blank verse.

The figures of speech used in the poem are Alliteration, Consonance, Hyperbole, Inversion, Metaphor, Metonymy, Onomatopoeia, Repetition, Simile, and Transferred Epithet. An example of Simile is “And then the lover Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad” – where the lover’s sigh is compared to the sound of a furnace.

Good morning, respected Principal, teachers and my dear friends. On the occasion of World Water Day, I, Master Dinesh Tripathi, stand here before you all to share my thoughts on the theme, ’The Importance of Rainwater Harvesting’.

Year by year, the problem of water scarcity is getting more severe for all of us. As the population increases, the shortage of water is a scary situation. We try and avoid wasting water and using it more consciously, but the biggest source of water wastage is the rainwater that literally goes down the drains. Nature blesses us with the resources that we need, but we have to be smart and active enough to save them. Billions of litres of rainwater that can be collected is simply allowed to run through the streets. The same water which causes flooding and other troubles can be used by us for our daily needs throughout the year.

The first step in the process of harvesting is to build tanks in our compounds. Pipes running from the terraces and roofs can be connected to these collection tanks to maximise water accumulation. The second step is to create recharge pits for bore wells that can increase the underground water table, allowing it to be used in the summer. The final step is reducing the use of concrete in our surroundings as this stops water percolation. Concrete causes the percentage of water seeping into the ground to go down from 70% to 25%. If these steps are implemented, we will never have to face water shortages in the future.

I request all of you to try and make these changes around you for our collective benefit. Only when we save water, can we save ourselves. On an important day like today, let’s promise to commit to this task and give it our best. I thank you all for giving me the chance to express my views before you.

(B2) Counterview on ‘Home-schooling is better than learning in formal schools’
In the olden days, education was quite informal. Children would gather under a tree and were taught by a learned person. Students were taught about trade, history, astronomy, languages, etc. Thereafter, the concept of home-schooling came into being. Children were home-schooled either by their parents or by a teacher. However, there were some shortcomings of home¬schooling. For example, children who were home-schooled didn’t have the kind of exposure that the students who went to school received. They didn’t get to interact with other kids their age, thereby limiting their communication skills and the overall development of their personality. Thus, formal schools were set up in society to cater to the need for education.

For many years, schools not only catered to the development of the mind of the learner, but also progressed to aid the development of the emotional skills. ’Co-curricular’ activities were added to the curriculum, so that the learner is trained in public speaking, physical fitness, music, etc. and gets the chance to explore his creativity and develop his hobbies.

Over time, the schools started laying even more emphasis on these activities, so that the students could develop an interest and focus on something apart from studies. It can therefore be concluded that formal schools are better than home-schooling.

In life, humans learn through experience. Similarly, the proverb is based upon practical experience. It is not just a saying, but also a piece of advice that is often overlooked by many.

(A2) In the literal sense, the proverb means that if a person wishes to stitch a coat for themselves, they should do so with the limited amount of cloth that they have. If the cloth is small, then a small-sized coat can be stitched and vice versa. In the same way, be it money, time or energy; it is important to spend only as much as one can afford to. Spending more than what one has is never a good thing.

Gauging what one has and then deciding upon the things that fall well within one’s means is the right way to live.

A group of eighteen spirited women from Bhandup village conducted an impromptu tree plantation drive on 20th October, 2019.

The act was in response to the recent cutting of trees that was undertaken by the BMC officials last week. News spread in the entire village that the next year’s rains would be affected due to the decreasing green cover. With the assistance of the Local Managing Committee, a tree plantation drive was undertaken to remedy the damage. It was heart-warming to see women, working men, senior citizens, etc., all coming together in a determined manner to save the environment. Hundreds of saplings were planted on that single day. Each person went a step ahead and adopted 5 plants each, thereby taking up responsibility of their upkeep.

“Finally, we made it happen!” was the chorus that echoed enthusiastically that evening. Everyone went home tired yet happy.

(B) (B1) The Importance of Being Alert and Responsible
Sujata suddenly got up one morning on hearing a thud at her window. Initially, she ignored the sound thinking it may have been a mistake. But soon the sound increased, both in terms of the pace as well as the intensity. She hesitatingly tiptoed to her window, without turning on the lights. As she looked outside, she could see a few people speaking in low tones. One man from among them seemed to be hacking away at the stump of a tree that had recently fallen down. The others whispered as he went about his work. Sujata observed this for some time; she then decided to alert her elder brother who was sleeping in the adjacent room. Sujeet, her brother, woke up and the duo observed as the stump was now fully hacked to the ground. The people seemed to be searching for something at the foot of the tree.

Very noiselessly, Sujata and her brother decided to alert the police. They would arrive shortly, they said. After almost what seemed to be an hour, the police siren was heard. Hearing the sound, the group dispersed in a fraction of seconds. Sujata and Sujeet reached the place of the incident. The police helped them solve the mystery.

It seemed that a group of bank robbers had stashed the money at the foot of the tree, a couple of months ago. The money was recovered and the siblings were felicitated in the locality for their alertness and sense of responsibility.

(B2) The Bravest act I’ve Ever Witnessed
Last year in September, we were travelling to our village for Ganesh Utsav. It had been raining heavily for two weeks and the rivers were flooded. As our bus reached the bridge over the river near our village, it stopped all of a sudden.

We got down to see what had happened and noticed other vehicles lined up ahead of us. We went ahead and found out that a car had crashed on the railing and was about to fall into the river. The car had five passengers, who were being rescued one at a time by helpful villagers. The current of the river was too strong and people were afraid that if the car fell into the river, no one would survive the force of the current. Fortunately, four people were safely taken out of the car and just then the worst thing happened. The car fell over the edge with the driver still inside and we were all in shock. In that same instant, one villager jumped into the river, helped the driver get out of the car and brought him close to the river bank. By then, the other villagers had climbed down to the river bank and helped both the men out of the water. It was definitely the bravest act that I have ever witnessed in my life.
