चतुर्भुज नावाचा एक तरुण एम. ए. उत्तीर्ण होऊन आपल्या गावात परत येतो. आपण एम. ए. झालो आहोत, हे त्याला आपल्या गावातील लोकांना सांगायचे असते. लोकांनी आपले कौतुक करावे, आदर करावा असे त्याला वाटत असते; पण गावकरी त्याचे म्हणणे ऐकून न घेता त्याने सोबत आणलेल्या मांजरीची चौकशी आणि कौतुक करत राहतात.

पहिल्या दृश्यामध्ये चतुर्भुज गोंडस, गुबगुबीत अशा अफगाणी मांजरीला घेऊन नीलरतन, जमिनदार आणि सतुकाका यांना भेटतो. तो प्रत्येकाला आपल्या एम.ए. च्या परीक्षेत मिळालेल्या यशाबद्दल सांगण्याचा प्रयत्न करत असतो; पण सगळेजण त्याच्या मांजरीबद्दल जाणून घ्यायला उत्सुक असतात. नीलरतन सतत त्याच्या बोलण्यात व्यत्यय आणून मांजरीबद्दल विचारत राहतो. चतुर्भुज म्हणतो, की या गावामध्ये कोणी एम.ए. पास झाल्याचे त्याला आठवत नाही. यावर नीलरतन उत्तर देतो, की इथे अनेकजण परीक्षा पास झाले आहेत; पण अशी मांजर मात्र कोणीही पाहिलेली नाही. हे ऐकून चतुर्भुजला खूप राग येतो.

आपल्या मुलाला मांजरीसोबत खेळता यावे म्हणून जमिनदार चतुर्भुजला आपल्या घरी येण्याचे आमंत्रण देतो. निघताना तो चतुर्भुजला असेही सांगतो, की ‘तू नाही आलास तरी चालेल; पण तुझ्या मांजरीला बेनीबरोबर पाठवून दे.’ यावर खूप रागावलेला चतुर्भुज काहीही उत्तर न देता तेथून निघून जाण्याचा प्रयत्न करतो. सतुकाका त्याला नम्रपणे वागण्याचा सल्ला देतात. ‘शिक्षणामुळे तरुण देशोधडीला लागले आहेत आणि त्यांची वर्तणूकही बिघडत आहे.’ अशी टिप्पणी करतात.

दुसऱ्या दृश्यामध्ये चतुर्भुजच्या घरातला प्रसंग दाखवला आहे. चतुर्भुज खूप रागावला आहे असे त्याची मोलकरीण त्याच्या आईला सांगते. घरातील एका लहान मुलाने त्याला मांजरीबद्दल विचारल्यावर तो त्याला एक फटका लगावतो. त्याची आई त्याला शांत राहायला सांगते आणि शेवटी मांजरीला खायला दयायचे सुचवून त्याला पुन्हा रागास आणते. रागावलेला चतुर्भुज मांजरीला ढकलून देऊन / फटकारून न खातापिता घरातून निघून जातो. ‘तुम्हांला मांजराची दया येते; पण माणसाची दया येत नाही,’ असे उत्तर तो त्याला ओरडणाऱ्या मावशीला देतो. घरातील लहान मुलगी आणि हरी हेदेखील मांजरीच्या मोठ्या जाडजूड शेपटीबद्दल बोलत असतात.

तिसऱ्या दृश्यामध्ये चतुर्भुज पिशवी घेऊन रस्त्याने चाललेला असतो. यावेळी त्याच्याबरोबर मांजर नसते. वाटेत त्याला साधूचरण आणि पारण भेटतात. ते त्याला मांजराबद्दल विचारतात. चतुर्भुज रागावून मांजर मेली आहे, असे उत्तर देतो. मांजर कशी मेली? या प्रश्नावर तो उत्तर देतो, की “अगदी तुम्ही सर्वजण मराल त्याचप्रमाणे दोरीला लटकून मेली!” गावातील उनाड मुले ‘मांजर, मांजर,’ असे ओरडत चतुर्भुजला चिडवत असतानाच एकांकिका संपते.

आपल्या शिक्षणामुळे आपण खूपच महत्त्वाची व्यक्ती बनलो आहोत, हा चतुर्भुजचा समज या एकांकिकेत विनोदी अंगाने मांडला आहे. लोक आपले कौतुक करत नाहीत, तर त्यांना मांजरीचे कौतुक वाटत आहे, ही वस्तुस्थिती तो स्वीकारत नाही. शेवटी तो लोकांशी फटकारून वागू लागतो.
