Trees are the Kindest Things I Know Paraphrase

The poem, ‘Trees are the Kindest things I Know’ by Harry Behn is the voice of a child as he observes the trees and understands their selfless nature. The poet looks at the world through the eyes of a little innocent child and speaks through him. The poet describes the gentle, caring and helpful nature of plants. In the beginning, the poet speaks about how trees are helpful to the animals by providing them shade and shelter. He also says that the trees help human beings, by providing them with food to eat and wood to make houses.

During spring, fresh green leaves sprout on the tree and bring with them a feeling of hope and happiness. The poet describes how the trees hold the sun’s light throughout the day for the benefit of all, in a generous manner. Finally, during the night, trees are shown to be like old grandmothers, who, at the end of the day, hum a lullaby so that the little ones can rest after a tired day.

They do this by gently swaying in the evening breeze, to provide care and warmth for a good night’s rest. The poet ends the poem with the same line that he uses in the beginning of the poem, to reaffirm his belief, that indeed, trees are the most selfless and kindest of all beings around.
