(Tansen bows in silent gratitude.)
Emperor Akbar:
“I think you have the most wonderful voice in the world!”
Tansen (with a smile):
“But, I don’t, Shahenshah! There is someone who sings far better than I do.”
Emperor Akbar:
“Really? Then I must have him sing in my court. Can you arrange it?”
Tansen (shaking his head):
“I’m afraid he will not come, Sire,”
Emperor Akbar:
“What! Not even if he hears that the emperor himself has summoned him?”
Tansen (half-scared):
“No, not even then.”
Emperor Akbar (smiling at Tansen):
Very well, Ustadjil If he doesn’t come, I shall go to him, myself. Will you take me to him?”

The Well Dispute
One fine day, two men, named Iqbal and Amaan, came to Emperor Akbar’s court. Iqbal had a complaint against Amaan that he was using the well-water that did not belong to him. Iqbal said,
“Shahenshah, please help me! This man is using the well-water that does not belong to him. He should pay me for it” Amaan quickly spoke to defend himself, “No, Shahenshah, I bought the well from this man just last week. The well now belongs to me.
Therefore, I don’t have to pay for the well-water.” Emperor Akbar asked Iqbal, “Did you sell the well to him?” Iqbal replied with tears in his eyes, “Yes, Shahenshah, I did sell the well to him. However, I never sold the water in the well. That still belongs to me and he is using it for free.” The Emperor knew that the situation was tricky and hence asked Birbal to provide a solution.
Birbal asked Iqbal, “If you have sold the well to Amaan, why are you still using the water from it?”
Iqbal replied, “Because, sir, the water in the well still belongs to me. He never paid for the water.” Birbal
smiled at Iqbal and said, “That may be true, but Amaan owns the well. Since you are now keeping your
water in Amaan’s well, shouldn’t you be paying him rent?”
The emperor was impressed with Birbal’s wit yet again and rewarded him. He allowed Iqbal to leave
with the warning that he would never use the water from the well that belonged to Amaan.

The Song of Songs Glossary
The Song of Songs Things to be Remember
The Song of Songs
