जहाजाच्या जवळपास एक भला मोठा हिमनग आहे, हे जहाजाचा कप्तान स्मिथ जाणून होता. त्याने त्याच्या माणसांना जहाजाच्या वरच्या मजल्यावरून त्या हिमनगाकडे लक्ष ठेवण्यास सांगितले होते. रात्री 11 वाजून 40 मिनिटांनी त्यांना अचानक जहाजाच्या मार्गात काहीतरी दृष्टीस पडले. जहाजाच्या मार्गात असलेला प्रचंड हिमनग पाहून त्यांना मोठा धक्का बसला. ही माहिती सांगण्यासाठी त्यांनी तात्काळ कप्तानाकडे धाव घेतली; पण तोपर्यंत वेळ निघून गेली होती. त्या हिमनगापासून जहाज दूर नेणे कप्तान स्मिथला शक्य होत नव्हते.
बर्फाच्या त्या महाकाय पर्वताने टायटॅनिकच्या एका बाजूच्या पृष्ठभागावर खोलवर ओरखडा ओढला आणि त्यामुळे जहाजाला भोके पडली. त्या भोकांमधून जहाजाच्या खालच्या मजल्यावर पाणी भरू लागले. या भयंकर परिस्थितीची जराही कल्पना नसलेले प्रवासी शांतपणे झोपले होते. कॅप्टन स्मिथ आणि त्याचे सहकारी जहाजात भरणारे पाणी थांबवू शकले नाहीत. वाढत चाललेल्या पाण्यामुळे टायटॅनिकला गंभीर धोका निर्माण झाला होता. रात्री 12 वाजून 15 मिनिटांनी कॅप्टन स्मिथने जहाजाच्या रेडिओवर टायटॅनिक धोक्यात असल्याचा आणि मदत मागणारा आपत्कालीन संदेश पाठवला. त्यानंतर त्याने जहाजावरील कर्मचाऱ्यांना सर्व प्रवाशांना जागे करण्याचा आदेश दिला.
टायटॅनिकपासून समुद्रात 20 मैल अंतरावर ‘The california’ नावाचे जहाज होते. या जहाजावरील रेडिओ चालक रेडिओ बंद करून झोपी गेला होता. त्यामुळे, टायटॅनिक संकटात असल्याचा आपत्कालीन संदेश या जहाजापर्यंत पोहोचू शकला नाही. ‘Carpathia’ या दुसऱ्या जहाजाला टायटॅनिकवरचा संदेश पोहोचला आणि मदत करण्यासाठी ते अतिशय वेगाने टायटॅनिकच्या दिशेने प्रवास करू लागले; मात्र दुर्दैवाने हे जहाज टायटॅनिकपासून दूर अंतरावर असल्याने त्याला तेथे पोहोचायला तीन तासांहून अधिक वेळ लागला.
दरम्यानच्या काळात टायटॅनिकवरील कर्मचारीवर्गाने जहाजावरील जीवनरक्षक नौका (life-boats) समुद्रात सोडल्या होत्या; मात्र जहाजावरील प्रवाशांच्या तुलनेत उपलब्ध जीवनरक्षक नौकांची संख्या फारच कमी होती. जहाजावरील दोन हजारांहून अधिक प्रवाशांपैकी फक्त काहीशे लोकांनाच या जीवनरक्षक नौका सामावून घेऊ शकत होत्या. चमचमत्या दिव्यासह काही मिनिटे सरळ उभे राहून 15 एप्रिल, 1912 च्या सकाळी 2 वाजून 20 मिनिटांनी टायटॅनिकने अटलांटिक महासागराच्या तळाशी जलसमाधी घेतली.
कॅप्टन स्मिथसह जहाजावरील सर्व कर्मचारीवर्ग आणि सुमारे 1500 प्रवासी या जहाजासह महासागरामध्ये बुडून गेले. सकाळी 3 वाजून 40 मिनिटांनी ‘Carpathia’ हे जहाज मदत घेऊन ‘टायटॅनिक’ पाशी येऊन पोहोचले. त्या जहाजावरील कर्मचाऱ्यांना तेथे टायटॅनिकमधून सोडलेल्या जीवनरक्षक नौका आढळल्या. त्यांनी या नौकांमधील 700 प्रवाशांचा जीव वाचवला.
टायटॅनिकला झालेल्या भीषण अपघाताच्या या घटनेने जहाजावरील प्रवाशांच्या सुरक्षिततेबाबत लोकांना गांभीर्याने विचार करण्यास भाग पाडले.
प्रत्येक जहाजाने आपत्कालीन स्थितीत जहाजावरील प्रत्येक प्रवाशाला सामावून घेऊ शकतील, एवढ्या प्रमाणात ‘जीवनरक्षक’ नौका सोबत ठेवाव्यात, जहाजावरील रेडिओ दिवस- रात्र अखंडपणे सुरू ठेवावेत, असे महत्त्वपूर्ण निर्णय 1913 मध्ये घेण्यात आले.
अटलांटिक महासागराच्या तळाशी गेलेले टायटॅनिकचे अवशेष पाहण्यासाठी 1985 मध्ये एक पाणबुडी पाठवण्यात आली. या पाणबुडीला टायटॅनिकचे दोन भाग झालेले अवशेष महासागराच्या तळाशी 4000 मीटर (13,000 फूट) खोलीवर विसावलेले आढळून आले.
टायटॅनिकच्या प्रथम प्रवासादरम्यान झालेल्या जलसमाधीच्या या हृदयद्रावक आणि भीषण घटनेवर आधारित 1998 मध्ये दिग्दर्शक जेम्स कॅमेरॉन यांनी एका प्रसिद्ध चित्रपटाची निर्मिती केली.
