I was still a thief when I met Anil, and though only 15,1 was an experienced and fairly successful hand.
Anil was watching a wrestling match when I approached him. He was about 25—tall, lean fellow and he looked easy-going, kind and simple enough for my purpose. I hadn’t had much luck of late and thought I might be able to get into the young man’s confidence. “You look a bit of a wrestler yourself,” I said. A little flattery helps in making friends. “So do you,” he replied, which put me off for a moment because at that time I was rather thin. After this introduction, Anil talked about the well-oiled wrestlers who were grunting, lifting and throwing each other about. I didn’t have much to say. Anil walked away. I followed casually. He took me to his room over the Jumna Sweet Shop and told me I could sleep on the balcony. But the meal I cooked that night must have been terrible because Anil gave it to a stray dog and told me to be off. But I just hung around, smiling in my most appealing way, and he couldn’t help laughing. |

Nor do we merely feel these essences For one short hour, no, even as the trees That whisper round a temple become soon Dear as the temple’s self, so does the moon, The passion poesy, glories infinite, Haunt us till they become a cheering light Unto our souls, and bound to us so fast, That, whether there be shine, or gloom o’ercast They always must be with us, or we die. |

The Pulley When God at first made Man, Having a glass of blessings standing by; Let us (said He) “pour on him all we can:” Let the worlds riches, which dispersed lie, Contract into a span. So strength first made a way; Then beauty flow’d, then wisdom, honour, pleasure : When almost all was out, God made a stay, Perceiving that alone of all His treasures Rest in the bottom lay. For if I should (said He) Bestow this jewel also on my creature, He would adore my gifts instead of me, And rest in Nature, not the God of Nature. So both should losers be. Yet let him keep the rest, But keep them with repining restlessness : Let him be rich and weary, that at last, If goodness lead him not, yet weariness May toss him to my breast. —George Herbert |

• Central idea/theme (2)
• Rhyme scheme (1)
• Figure of speech (1)
• Special features (2)
• Favourite line/lines (1)
• Why I like/don’t like the poem (1)
Answer:
(A) A1.
A2. The things which express sorrow are :
the dooms, gloom o’ercast.
A3. The rhyme scheme of the last five lines is – a a b b c
(B)
The title of the poem is ‘The Pulley’ and it is composed by George Herbert.
The poem deals with the idea why man remains continually restless throughout his life. The poet says that man’s restlessness is all because of the fact God withheld the quality of ‘rest’ from man. As a result of this, man’s thoughts would always finally turn towards God, the Creator.
The poet has used five-lined stanzas with a rhyming pattern so the rhyme scheme used throughout the poem uniformly is a b a b a.
The poet has used many figures of speech adding charm to the poem. The prominent one is metaphor as the quality of ‘rest,’ is indirectly compared with a ‘jewel.’ Besides, the poet has used inversion, alliteration, repetition, etc.
The poem has a specific message to offer. The poem tries to convey that though we possess the riches or have all the good qualities with us, ultimately we have to direct our thoughts towards God, our Creator.
‘Let him be rich and weary’ is my favourite line from the poem. The poem deals with paradox. It indicates that even though the man may be very rich, ultimately he will feel exhausted and recall his Creator.
I like the poem because it tells us the importance of never becoming self-contented but always try to recall God and thank Him for all the things He has bestowed upon us.

Honourable judges, respected teachers and my dear friends.
Its’s greater pleasure to be here to express my views about leading a happy and joyful life. Nowadays, the conditions around us are filled with tension, mental stress, deadlines to meet and great hustle and bustle. It is hindering us from living a happy and joyful life.
To lead a cheerful life, we need to live in a stress-free atmosphere. Though stress has become inevitable now, we have to learn the techniques to deal with it skillfully. One can regularly exercise and properly meditate to qiake oneself physically as well as mentally strong.
Another way to live joyfully is by keeping good company. ‘A man is known by the company he keeps’ is a well-known saying. Their cheerfulness helps us to remain calm. We see and read about many influencial people and how they overcame the hurdles in their lives and achieve great success. Such success stories should be taken as an inspiration for all.
In the end I feel that it is us, who have to decide firmly to lead a happy and cheerful life.
Thank you all.

Children should follow their inclinations.
When summer vacations start, many students jump out of joy as they look forward to the long awaited days of sleeping-in, chilling on the couch aijd hanging out with friends.
Yet, what their parents expect is a summer of full-time jobs, summer school classes, internships, studying abroad and more. While it may be tempting to get ahead and earn during summer, students should be taking a true break during the summer months instead.
What students really need to focus on during the summer months is taking a break from the usual stress and work. Relaxing during summer break is important because it allows students to recharge for the coming quarter. After a stressful year of nonstop work, students who choose not to take the summer off will find themselves less motivated during the regular academic year. Personal ventures, such as an art project that was meant to be completed long ago, or a book that has sat on a dusty shelf waiting to be read, can be just as enriching as a structured class. Free time helps in creativity often overlooked during the regular school year and makes individuals well-rounded. Pursuing personal interest such as dancing, sculpting or graphic design ventures can be even more worthwhile than sticking to the structured regime of classes and internships. These projects will shine on resumes as they exhibit true passion and interest on the individual’s part.
As unexpected as it may seem, students would benefit more by focusing on themselves during the summer, working on personal projects and simply relaxing.

Nature — The Best Teacher
When a person becomes tired of following the same routine daily and doing similar jobs, he should take a break to relax and rejuvenate himself by going away and being with nature. Nature has the power to comfort us, to refresh us and to send us back in the routine fully rejuvenated. Nature can teach us many things if we carve out some time to look at it carefully. Nature teaches us to never feel superior or be boastful about our achievement. It makes us realise that we are just a drop in the vast expanse of the ocean.
Nature teaches us to be humble in our approach and go on persevering in spite of the obstacles that come in our way. Ants tell us the importance of teamwork, spiders teach us resilience and birds teach us hard work and its significance. If we spend sometime observing nature, we can aim to gain wisdom and other great virtues in life.

Rohan was a boy from a nearby village who had recently shifted to the city and was living in a hostel close to his college.
In his college, there was an on-going campaign against the use of plastic but he never paid attention to it and kept on using plastic bags whenever needed.
One fine morning, he went to the library to read the newspaper. He was shocked by the news that a herd of elephants died and in the post mortem, it was revealed that they had ingested polybag thrown by the tourists and people in the adjacent areas. The same newspaper had a photo of a cow from whose stomach, 6 kg of plastic waste was taken out.

It was Sunday and I was enjoying the latest movie in the theatre with my parents. Suddenly there Was a great uproar. A young fellow stood up from the front row of the hall and yelled ‘Bomb’. He had noticed a plastic bag containing something suspicious in it. As a result, everyone rushed towards the exit gates trying to evacuate the theatre.
In a short while, the police arrived with the bomb squad. They checked all the rows to search for a bomb. When they reached the second front row, they found a bag in which something heavy was wrapped up and a ticking sound was clearly heard.
Very cautiously the plastic bag was opened and the parcel wrapped in newspapers was taken out. When the parcel was opened, there was no bomb found but an old alarm clock duly wrapped up and placed under the seat. Everyone present in the theatre heaved a sigh of relief. They realised somebody had played a prank on them.
