Why? Paraphrase
The poem “Why?” describes the curiosity of a young mind. The poem lists the endless questions of a curious little boy. The boy wants to know the reason why wood is able to swim, but lead and marbles are not and they sink. He wants an answer for why stars shine and why winds blow.
He even questions the need for humans to eat and drink. He seeks to know who makes the clouds and why the clouds cross the sky. The boy wonders why the sun sinks behind the hills and why the flowers have to die. He wants to know why the wind comes out of the bellows’
nose and why pop-guns make a popping sound. His curious mind also wants answers to why the waves of the ocean rise and fall. He also asks questions like “why fish have gills” and silly ones like “why boys cannot fly”. He is interested in knowing the reason why coal burns, but stone doesn’t. He wonders how seeds get inside the apple’s core and how marrow gets inside the bone.
He seeks to find why ice melts and why spiders eat flies. The boy questions why bees sting and why the yeast makes the dough rise. “Why?” या कवितेमध्ये लहान मुलांच्या मनात निर्माण होणाऱ्या कुतूहलाचे वर्णन केले आहे. येथे कवीने एका लहानग्या जिज्ञासू बालकाच्या न संपणाऱ्या अमर्याद प्रश्नांची यादी मांडली आहे. लाकूड तरंगू शकते; पण शिसे व गोट्या का तरंगत नाहीत, ते तळाशी का बुडतात? यामागचे कारण त्याला जाणून घ्यायचे आहे. तारे का चमकतात? वारे का वाहतात? या प्रश्नांची उत्तरे त्याला हवी आहेत. माणसाला खाण्यापिण्याची गरजच काय? असा प्रश्नही त्याला भेडसावतो.
