Give geographical reasons for the following (any two): [6]
1. There are fewer natural ports on the eastern coast of India.
2. The northeastern part of Brazilian Highlands receives very less rainfall.

Answer:
1. There are fewer natural ports on the eastern coast of India due to the following reasons:
i. The Eastern Coast of India borders the Bay of Bengal and has formed as a result of depositional work of rivers.
ii. Due to the gentle slope of the land, east flowing rivers flow at lower velocities and deposit the sediments at the coast. As a result, deltas are found along this coast and make the coast shallow.
iii. A natural port can only develop where there is a deep sea and an indent coast line.
2. i. Brazil receives rainfall from the South-East Trade winds as well as the North-East Trade winds.
ii. Some parts of the Highlands extend upto the northern coast.
iii. The escarpments act as an obstruction to the South-East trade winds coming from the sea. This causes orographic type of rainfall in the coastal areas.
iv. Beyond the highlands, as the effect of these winds gets reduced, the region receives less rainfall.
Due to all these reasons, the north-eastern part of Brazilian Highlands receives very less rainfall and is called as a rain shadow region or a ‘Drought Quadrilateral’.
3. i. Due to the vast latitudinal extent of Brazil, it experiences wide range of difference in climate. For e.g. Near the equator, it is hot while near Tropic of Capricorn there is temperate type of climate.
ii. In the coastal regions near the Equator as the sun’s rays are perpendicular, there is not much difference in the temperature of the country throughout the year. Moreover, the winds move in the vertical direction in this region.
iii. Also the convergence zone of the trade winds near the coastal areas is extremely weak.
As a result, cyclones are not formed.
Therefore, tropical cyclones occur rarely in Brazil.
4. i. Railways is an easy and convenient mode of transport. It is a suitable for transportation of people as well as goods.
ii. The railway network is dense in North Indian Plains and in areas where the slopes are gentle.
iii. Also, this area has high population and well developed agriculture and industries.
This has lead to increased urbanisation in these regions, as a result of which a dense network of railways has developed in the north Indian plains.

1. i. Historical background of India:
a. India was under the British rule for nearly one and a half century and gained independence in 1947.
b.In the initial years of its independence, India fought three wars. These wars had an adverse effect on the economy of India.
c. In the post independence period, India faced severe shortage of food grains which resulted in famines in several parts of the country.
ii. Historical background of Brazil:
a. Brazil was under the Portuguese rule for more than three centuries and gained independence in 1822.
b. Further, it was governed by a populist military government from 1930 till 1985.
c. Brazil went through global financial difficulties till date 20th century. [4]
2. i. It is our social responsibility to ensure that the cleanliness and sanctity of the place of visit is not disturbed during our visit.
ii. So during field visit, we must ensure that we do not throw trash or litter around us.
iii. We must use the dustbins for throwing empty packets of snacks, empty water bottles, left-over food items, etc. Also, we must try to segregate dry and wet waste.
iv. We must carry huge garbage bags so as to use them to collect trash in absence of a dustbin or if the dustbin is overflowing with garbage. This garbage bag can be disposed later.
3. i. Great diversity in wildlife is found in Brazil than any other country in the world.
ii. Guinea pigs, crocodiles, alligators, monkeys, pumas, leopards, golden lion Tamarin, etc. are found in Brazil.
iii. Huge anacondas are found in the swampy areas of the Pantanal.
iv. Swordfish, found in the seas while pink dolphins and piranhas, found in the rivers are among the fish varieties.
v. Major birds like macaws, flamingos, various types of parrots and Condors that are huge in size & fly high in the sky are found in Brazil.
vi. A wide variety of species of insects is also found in Brazil.
Due to these varieties, the wildlife of Brazil is very rich and diverse.
