• Describe some features of country life and town life.
Answer:
Country life is simple, warm, slow and peaceful. People love each other and share everything that they have. On the other hand, town life is grand, luxurious, fast paced and unpeaceful. People are unfriendly, selfish and often live in fear.
• Rewrite the story, using human characters and making other appropriate changes.
Answer:
Once upon a time, Mr Town went on a visit to his cousin in the country. Ms Country was a simple, rustic person, she loved her town friend. She gave him a hearty welcome. Rice and dal, were all she had to offer, but she offered them freely, Mr Town rather turned up his long nose at this simple country fare, and said;
“I cannot understand, Cousin, how you can put up with this poor food! But of course you cannot expect anything better in the country. Come with me and I will show you how to live. When you see town life, you will wonder how you could ever live in the country.”
No sooner said than done. The two cousins set off for the town and arrived at the big tower where Mr Town lived in an apartment.
“You will want some refreshment after our long journey,” said the polite Mr Town, and took his sister to a grand town hall. There they found the remains of a fine feast that had just ended. Soon both of them were eating up the left over pizzas, burgers, cakes, ice-creams and alt that was nice.
Suddenly they heard a few men shouting.
“What is that?” said Ms Country.
It is only the goons of the area,” answered the other.
Only!” said the Country Mouse. “I do not like that threat at my dinner!”
Just at that moment the door flew open, in came two huge men, and the two had to run off.
“Good-bye, Cousin,” said Ms Country.
“What! Going so soon?” said the other.
“Yes,” she replied; “Better rice and dal n peace than cakes and pizza in fear.”
• What is the meaning of ‘only’?
• What does the country mouse mean by ‘only!’?
Answer:
Usually, ‘only’ means ‘no more than’. It also means ‘just’ when the Town Mouse uses it for the dogs. Whereas the Country Mouse says ‘only!’ as an expression of shock because he is scared of the dogs.
Discuss :
• What is better- country life or town life? Why?
Answer:
According to me, the country life is simple, carefree, loving, peaceful and easy. On the other hand, town life is very competitive and fast-paced. But the facilities that we get in the town are much better than the country life. Town life is more lively and exciting too compared to country life.

Two Fables Glossary
Two Fables Summary
The two Friends and the Bear
The town mouse and the county mouse
